User experienceBrief customer comments and use of AIMSSefton Borough Council have used AIMS since early 2006. The software is installed in the Emergency Control centre in Bootle. As well as using the AIMS Incident Management System, they also use Atlas OPS Vulcan which is the CBRN downwind hazard prediction software. John Hodgekinson, Emergency Planning Officer writes: So far the Atlas AIMS system has mainly been used for exercises, most recently on the 11th of October when we exercised our emergency helpline's response to a flooding incident. A member of our staff has loaded the local flood plain information onto the system, as a layer, so we were quickly able to identify whether areas from which we were receiving requests for information were likely to be affected. As an example of a real situation we had to deal with, we were also recently contacted by our environmental protection department which had received a number of complaints from local residents concerning a smell, which they said they felt was coming from the site of a disused factory. The factory was at that time being demolished. As the factory had, historically, been used in the manufacture of chemicals the environmental protection staff were able to provide us with the types of chemicals involved and the locations from which complaints were being received. By entering the information into Atlas OPS Vulcan we were able to plot a plume for them, and overlay the hazard area onto a map. This than showed that all but one of the addresses, from which complaints had been received, were within the plume when wind speeds were at their lowest. The only house that was outside the plume actually fell within the plume when we increased wind speed slightly. The information was accepted by the contractor who ceased demolition and brought in specialist contractors to clear the site. |
