Brief customer comments and use of AIMS

Atlas Incident Management System (AIMS) was developed in consultation with a number of Local Authorities across the UK.

The intention was to obtain a simple management recording system that could be used by LA staff during any emergency, to record all decisions, tasks, contacts, actions and messages. The system had to be one which, given that many LA staff may not use it daily, would be very easy to use (bearing in mind that some staff might not use it for some weeks) and user friendly.

Following delivery of version one some testing was undertaken, which identified a number of issues by the users. Many were cosmetic but nevertheless were required to enable positive use of the software.

Due to the interest shown by users a national AIMS user group was launched, which allowed them to meet with Ultra Electronics APL to discuss and identify future amendments both to the operating system. One such change was to enable a training use and a live use capability. This ensured that the "live" system did not become cluttered by training and exercising of staff who would use the system.

Version 2 has now been delivered following the AIMS users meetings.

In Bristol we have now used the system to support at least 5 emergencies  that have occurred, varying from floods to fires to main water mains rupturing. We have found to date that the system has provided a very  useful recording capability coupled with task management.

Although we have only trained our Civil Contingences Unit to date we do now intend to role this out to operational staff as part of our new Command & Control capability across the authority.
